These are mostly raw scans. Not all have PG clearances, but I believe that all of them are in the public domain. If you believe you own the copyright on one of these works, drop me a note.

If the work is already submitted for clearance to PG, there is a link to the clearance record. Otherwise, there is a note of "Rule 1", "Rule 5", or "Rule 6" depending on the way I expect to clear the copyright. These refer to the PG Copyright Howto. If I have not completed the Rule 6 research, you can only download tpvs.

German books

The core of this collection of German books comes from Martha and Frieda Hildebrandt. Both appear to have been students of German in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago in the early 20th Centrury. At least one appears to have gone on to become a German teacher. I bought their collection at a garage sale in the 1980s.

A note about directories

These are in-progress works which I am preparing for various purposes. Here are some of the subdirectories you may find in each book directory in roughly process order:

• tpv Title Page and Verso, used to get PG clearances
• originals is raw scans, straight from my scanner.
• rotated is raw scans reoriented correctly.
• pages is scans burst into separate pages.
• deskewed is pages which have been deskewed.
• cropped is pages which have been cropped.
• matted is cropped pages which have been matted (new margins).
• reduced is pages reduced to a 4 bit grayscale I use to make dejavu books.
• mono is reduced pages converted to monochrome for input to PGDP.
• illos or illustrations is full-resolution images from the book.
• ocr is the work directory for tesseract-ocr.

Active Projects

These were projects I used to work on during my twice daily trolly commute or other spare moments. Since November 2006, I've been commuting by car to Cranberry, about an hour away. PGDP time is much harder to come by.

• 5 Jun 2010: I have a goal of providing all my scanned books with an HTML page-turning interface, so that they can be read online in facsimile form. I have nearly completed the German Language books, and am mo=ving on to Readers and Literature.
• Studien und Plaudereien im Vaterland, PMing, PPing as of 16 July 2007, PP of XHTML nearly complete as of 18 Nov 2008, PPV Comments May 2010, corrections in progress
• I have a fast clean algorithm for gutter noise and page background removal. I've implemented it with Leptonica. First draft worked OK, but didn't work on most pages. Refining. 2ndary trolly project.
• I've started image prep for The Taming of Zenas Henry. This is my test book for gutter noise removal.
